TB (Tuberculosis) is an infectious disease caused by germs known as tubercle bacillus. The bacillus is air bone and attacks the lungs. It can also attack other parts of the baby like bones, spines, liver and the brain.
The symptoms are:
- Cough lasting for two and more weeks
- Blood stained sputum
- Fever and Chills
- Night sweats
- Loss of weight
- Chest pain
- Difficulty in breathing
- Feeling tired all the time
How to prevent it
- Cover your mouth while coughing and sneezing
- Open Windows in houses, schools, offices and public transport
- Avoid staying in crowded and poorly ventilated places
- Take your prescribed TB treatment seriously
- Have your child vaccinated with TB vaccine at birth
Treatment for it:
It is advisable to take the medicine for TB treatment continuously for six months daily under doctor consultation. If the medicines are not taken well one might develop multi drug resistant TB which may be very difficult to treat. Avoid consuming alcohol during the entire course of treatment.
Diet to be followed
- Take 2 cups of fruits and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables per day
- Consume 3 cups of fat- free, low- fat milk per day
- Consume foods and drinks with little added sugars or caloric sweeteners
- Eat protein rich foods such as fish, beans, peas, nuts and seeds
