Oral health tips for babies


The best way to make sure your baby has a healthy mouth is to practice oral cleaning, eating and drinking habits at home. Here are few tips to ensure that your child has healthy teeth for a lifetime.
  1. To soothe the irritation of teething, give your baby a teething ring to chew on.
  2. Sweetened drinks from the bottle can cause decay. If your baby needs drink between feeds use cooled boiled water.
  3. To prevent tooth decay, wipe your baby’s teeth with a moist cloth after feeding.
  4.  At about eight months, start your infant drinking from a cup.
  5. Introduce your infant to tooth cleaning as soon as the teeth appear.
  6. Low strength fluoride toothpaste would help in tooth cleaning.
  7. At about eighteen month take your child to the family dentist for a check up.
  8.  If you give your baby a bottle at bedtime or naps, fill it with water.
  9. Juice, formula, milk and breast milk can cause decay if left in your baby’s mouth.
  10.  Every month, lift your baby’s lip and look for changes on her teeth.
  11.  Tooth decay often starts on the front or back of the front teeth and along the gums.
  12.  If you notice white or brown spots on the baby’s teeth or anything unusual, contact your baby’s physician or dentist.
