Health benefits of Soya Beans


Indian women include Soybeans in cooking. They include soya chunks in making dishes. The taste is mouthwatering and the benefits are huge health wise. Let us now look at what soya beans are all about. 

Soybeans are members of the pea family of vegetables. More research and evidence suggests that it could be wise to include soy foods in the daily diet. Soy beans contain hormone-like substances called phytoestrogens that mimic the action of the hormone oestrogen. Soy is a high quality protein. The soybean is high in fibre and protein. It is cholesterol-free and low in saturated fat. It is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. It is lactose free and high in phytoestrogens.

Eating soybeans can reduce the risk of a range of health problems including coronary heart disease. Health benefits for menopausal women could include fewer hot flushes, protection from coronary heart disease and lowered risk of osteoporosis. Soy foods like soymilk, soy yoghurt, soy bread and tofu are high in phytoestrogens.

Asian women tend to have soy-rich diets while Western women have meat-rich diets. It is shown that soy-rich diet helps to reduce menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes. Soybeans seem to offer promise in helping some women to manage menopausal hot flushes.

The diet can be to

  • Take 500 ml of soymilk per day
  • 100g of tofu per day
  • 4-5 slices of soy linseed bread per day.
  • Soya bean have shown to lower blood cholesterol levels.

The suggested health benefits of whole soy foods include

  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Improvements to blood vessels, such as greater elasticity of artery walls
  • Reduced risk of osteoporosis
  • Protection against various cancers including those of the breast, colon, prostate and skin
